The voices behind the Sunset catalog
Soul royalty, hip-hop pioneers, hit songwriters, prewar gospel blues and today’s biggest names in stand-up comedy. These are the songwriters and artists whose work Sunset Music is proud to administer.
One roster, every era
A catalog is only as strong as the people who created it. At Sunset Music, we administer the work of a roster that stretches across a full century of American recording, from the raw, devotional guitar of the 1920s to the soul records that defined the 1970s, the birth of hip-hop in the Bronx and the stand-up specials that fill arenas today.
Administration is the quiet work that keeps that legacy earning. We register works, track usage, collect royalties across mechanical, performance and sync, and make sure every placement in film, television, advertising and streaming is properly cleared and credited. It is the same care we bring to supervision and licensing, applied to the creators who trust us with their catalogs.
Legends on the roster
Gladys Knight
The Empress of Soul. With the Pips and on her own, she gave the world “Midnight Train to Georgia” and a run of classics that earned her multiple Grammy Awards, a place in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Kennedy Center Honors.
Melvin Glover
Known to the world as Melle Mel, the lead voice of Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five. His verses on “The Message” helped turn hip-hop into social commentary, and the group became the first rap act inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Blind Willie Johnson
The Texas singer and slide guitarist whose late-1920s recordings still haunt modern music. His “Dark Was the Night, Cold Was the Ground” travels beyond the solar system aboard the Voyager Golden Record.
L. Russell Brown
A hitmaker’s hitmaker who co-wrote “Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Ole Oak Tree” and “Knock Three Times,” two of the most recognizable pop songs of the 1970s.
Joel Diamond
A veteran record producer and music executive whose credits include Engelbert Humperdinck’s hit “After the Lovin’,” with decades of work across pop and adult contemporary.
Gina Thompson
The R&B vocalist behind the 1996 hit “The Things That You Do,” a track remembered for its featured verse from a young Missy Elliott.
Kevin Hart
One of the best-selling stand-up comedians in history, whose record-breaking tours and specials made him a global entertainment brand and a recipient of the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor.
Deon Cole & Jay Oakerson
Two of stand-up’s sharpest voices. Deon Cole, the writer and actor known for black-ish and grown-ish, and Jay Oakerson, the club headliner and podcast favorite, round out a comedy catalog with real staying power.
