Downtown Keokuk is set to carry on the Independence Day celebrations with its popular monthly First Friday event, this time titled “Patriots Picnic,” on July 7. Organized by Keokuk Main Street Inc., the event promises an exciting mix of local retail, dining, drinking, and live music.
Local businesses will keep their doors open until 7 p.m., giving folks ample time to shop at their favorite retailers. Attendees can also expect to indulge in dining and drinking specials offered by some of Keokuk’s finest eateries and drinkeries.
Adding to the festive atmosphere, the John-Paul Jones Group, led by the blues legend himself, will perform live at 7 p.m. outside the American Legion Post #41 on North 8th Street. The show is free of charge and open to the public.
For more than 25 years, Professor John-Paul “Jp” Jones has led the John-Paul Jones Group to the top 10 of the international charts on Reverbnation. The band is known for its vibrant music, deeply inspired by blues artists from the late 1960s like Phil Lynott, Jimi Hendrix, Robin Trower, and Rory Gallager, and equally John Lee Hooker, Miles Davis, Jon Butcher, as well as contemporary artists like Winery Dogs, Eric Gales, and Joe Bonamassa.
However, music isn’t the only area where Professor Jones excels. A member of the American Federation of Musicians (AFM), the Blues Foundation (BRC), the International Blues Foundation (IBF), the International Singer-Songwriters Association (ISSA), and the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP), Jones uses his talents to organize and participate in several charitable concert events, including Patriots Picnic and Blues-Bikes-Cars.
First Friday events are a testament to the developing local community and businesses of Keokuk, and this month’s Patriots Picnic is sure to deliver a memorable experience for all participants.
