While the music industry is in shambles with the spread of fake AI-generated vocals and songs, Grimes ran in the other direction. In a series of tweets from the Canadian synth-pop artist, Grimes suggested using her voice in AI Voice Vocals.

Grimes’ Voice in AI

AI has been gaining traction and advancements this year. Over the past few weeks, there has been a trend in different social media platforms (mostly TikTok) of fake music from famous artists. All of these artists involved in the trend did not record the specific song they are on as it was only produced via Artificial Intelligence.

Several major record labels have been trying to fight these AI voice tracks of famous artists. But as per Engadget’s report, Canadian Synth-Pop artists Grimes offered her voice to use in an AI-generated song. The artist suggested this as she has no label and legal bindings, hence why she stated, “Feel free to use my voice without penalty.”

If any artist became successful with an AI-generated song that used Grimes’ voice, she promised that she will split 50% royalties, which is the same deal as she would with any artist she collaborated with. The artist also believes that it is cool to be fused with a machine as she likes the idea of making art open-source and killing copyright infringements.

While the idea of Grimes is fresh to some, Engadget reported that this is not the first she weighed in on Artificial Intelligence as she already collaborated with an AI lullaby app in 2020. This collaboration was done for her son, X Æ A-XII, to create a better baby sleeping situation.

This may have been a confusing route for Grimes’ music career as it sounds new to some. But this might be the chance for her fans to hear her music once again as they have been eagerly waiting for an update on the status of her next album.

Billboard reported that Grimes’ next album called BOOK 1 is already done. She shared this after her face-post surgery as she and her friend concluded the album by perfecting the last song in the plastic surgery clinic. She was not allowed by her doctors to leave, hence why she finished the album in the location.

Future of AI Music

In 2019, Grimes predicted that generative AI could lead to the end of human art, specifically live music. She stated, “Once there’s actually Artificial General Intelligence, they’re gonna be so much better at making art than us. Once AI can totally master science and art, which could happen in the next 10 years, probably more like 20 or 30 years.”

Aside from the Canadian singer, The Verge reported that experimental musician Holly Herndon also embraced voice cloning and artificial intelligence tools as she introduced her own artificial voice in 2021 called Holly Plus.

Holly Plus will allow users to upload audio files, where they will be given a new version sung in her voice. However, this AI tool is not free as it is only available to members of Herndon’s decentralized autonomous organization to profit from the voice model.
