On Monday, the Cannes Film Festival hosted the world premiere of HBO’s latest original drama series, “The Idol.”
Co-created by Sam Levinson, the man behind “Euphoria,” along with Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye and Reza Fahim, the series — which became embroiled in controversy earlier this year after an explosive Rolling Stone report — revolves around an enigmatic LA club owner who secretly runs a cult akin to NXIVM and an aspiring female pop star.
While the two episodes that screened received a five-minute standing ovation, the first reviews and reactions have been much more divisive. Read about some of the reactions from critics here.
Viewers will be able to judge the series for themselves when “The Idol” debuts on HBO on Sunday, June 4 at 9 p.m. ET/PT.
For now, here are the best photos from the premiere.
